State Road 29 Widening

On November 15, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) had a public meeting to discuss the widening of SR 29 from Oil Well Road to US 82. The proposed reconstruction is scheduled to take place early next year where the two lane highway will become four lanes. Also proposed are alternatives for heavy traffic that will bypass downtown Immokalee and a two lane round about at WestClox and New Market Road West. Major obstacles to this expansion are that approximately 55 acres of wet and flood lands and wildlife will be affected. This project will also cost in excess of 166 million dollars. However, there still is a no-build alternative where FDOT will not make any changes until 2045 but maintain SR29 the way that it is currently. This option will not cost anything. Next week, FDOT will review all concerns and comments before proceeding to finalize the project.
