Immokalee Regional Airport’s Airport Layout Plan Update Seeks Community Input

The Immokalee Regional Airport (IMM) is in the process of performing an Airport Layout Plan (ALP) update. The county’s contractor for this process, Atkins, is wrapping up the investigation phase which is documented in a 30 percent Airport Layout Plan Narrative Report. This report is available for public comment via the Collier County Airport Authority (CCAA) website at colliergov.net/airportauthority. Public involvement is a critical component of airport master planning and comments are currently being requested.

Airport planning is a strategic process used to establish guidelines for the efficient development of airports that is consistent with local, state and national goals. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recommends that all airports complete ALP updates within five-to-seven year increments. The purpose of an ALP update is to study and provide the Airport a 20-year development program that will create a safe, efficient, economical, and environmentally responsible airport facility. This study will capable of facilitating the demand for aviation services expected, meet the development goals of the CCAA, and create additional public value for residents in the Immokalee area and the aeronautical community at large.

The ALP is a critical planning tool for the Airport Authority which depicts the existing airport facilities, and planned development initiatives. This document is also critical for coordination between Airport Authority, the FAA, and the Florida Department of Transportation. Key issues identified by the CCAA staff to be considered during the development of the ALP are as follows: increasing industrial and non-aviation areas within the airport boundary to allow for the expansion of non-aeronautical land uses; increase lease revenue; and increase economic development within the immediate region of the airport. This project is expected to be completed at the end of this year.

This 30 percent design narrative is the first opportunity for citizens of Immokalee and stakeholders of Immokalee Regional Airport to review and offer comment on this first project milestone. Comments will be accepted via mail and an online survey. All comments and responses will be made available to the public for review via the Airport Authority website. In addition, a public workshop will be held in September after the recommendation phase of the project at which time the consultant and CCAA will be available on site to answer questions about the ALP project.
